Sign language interpreting for university events

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) provides highly skilled, certified, and experienced interpreter(s) for university events. An interpreter coordinator will evaluate both length and complexity of the assignment in order to determine the number of interpreters needed to ensure top-quality interpretation for deaf and hard of hearing clients and maintain occupational safety standards for full time staff and part-time interpreters.

Kent State University faculty and staff organizing university events.

Requirements

Submitted requests are contractual obligations for service. SAS requires a written notification of cancellation no less than 48 hours prior to requested assignment; otherwise, the requester will be charged the full amount.

  • Cost is $45.00 per hour/per interpreter with a 1 hour minimum charge; each additional hour is billed in .25 increments;
  • A 2 hour minimum standard fee, per interpreter, will be charged for use of non-staff part-time interpreters;
  • If Kent State University employees are not available, services will be outsourced to an interpreting agency. The hourly rates are higher. Contact SAS for further details. 
  • Billing is processed via inter-departmental charge index (IDC);
  • Interpreters required to travel off campus will be reimbursed mileage according to the Kent State University reimbursement policy;
  • SAS will provide a 1 day parking permit for interpreters if necessary;

What happens next

An SAS interpreter coordinator will review and respond to requests during regular business hours, Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, within 1 business day. A confirmation email will be sent once an interpreter is assigned to the event.
