Course Revision Best Practices

The following is a checklist of items to review each time a course is up for revision.

General Considerations

  1. Update the base course with the current version of the template.
    • Refer to the changelog.
  2. File manager is organized.
  3. Item names, item descriptions, and file attachment titles are generic. Dates, module/week numbers, and course names/numbers have been removed.
  4. Final day of the course is set per program requirements.
    • Confirm this day and add the the CCP sheet.
  5. Checklist items are marked review status "on".
    • Check that each item name is displayed appropriately in the checklist item so that it makes sense to students.
  6. CLOs and MLOs use 2nd person language.
    • Remove "Students will be able to..."
  7. Runtimes listed with each video/narrated presentation.
    • Check the appropriate course template to see if there is a preferred way of listing the duration.
  8. Presentations are compiled in iSpring and are formatted correctly.
    • Naming sensible for tab display and slide titles.
    • No bio, title, or email for the presenter.
    • Use HTML5
  9. Module surveys are included if desired by the program.
    • Check the knowledge base article to determine which programs utilize the module surveys.
  10. Assignments have rubrics with correct point values.
  11. Due dates and point values in the grade center match the course schedule.
  12. Graded discussions are toggled to appear in "Needs Grading".

Accessibility Considerations

  1. iSpring presentations have transcripts in the notes section and CC available.
    • Use the iSpring templates in Egnyte.
  2. iSpring presentations do not play automatically.
  3. All videos have closed captions.
    • Check the course budget and use 3Play Media as needed to generate captions.
  4. Transcripts exist for any recorded items.
  5. Module structure is limited to three levels deep (although two levels is ideal when possible with the course content).
  6. PDF documents are not scanned images.
  7. Remove references to the university accessibility policy from items in the course.
    • Items should not refer to the accessibility policy or specifically state that they are inaccessible.
  8. Update syllabus to reflect the updated university accessibility policy.
