Extract Audio Files Recorded in PowerPoint

These steps will explain how to extract audio files from a PowerPoint presentation for both PC and Mac users.

Before you begin, be sure that you have done the following:

  1. Create a copy of your PowerPoint to use for this process. This will ensure that the original presentation remains intact.
  2. Save your new PowerPoint file in a different location as .pptx. This file type must be selected in order for this process to be successful.

Step 1: Navigate to the file and check that the file name extensions are viewable.

  1. PC Users: Click the View tab in the Explorer window and check the box next to File name extensions
  2. Mac Users: Click Preferences from the Finder menu and check the Show all filename extensions box.

Step 2. Change the File Extension to .zip.

Right-click the name of the PowerPoint file and select rename to change the file extension from .pptx to .zip. A pop-up will appear asking you to verify that you wish to change the file name extension. Confirm this by clicking Yes on a PC (or Use .zip on a Mac).

Step 3. Locate and extract the audio files from the .zip folder.

PC Users: Locate the .zip folder and right click to Extract.

Mac Users: Locate the .zip folder and double click to unzip the folder.

Once the files are extracted, open the ppt folder and then the media folder.  Inside the media folder you will find the audio files from your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. The audio file names will end in a number that corresponds to a slide from the presentation.

Note: It is recommended that you store the audio files to a different location for later use.
